Time seems to fly by faster every year. Memorial Day is behind us and the weather has been beautiful.

The fourth of July will be here and gone and so will the summer before we know it. Our resident s are enjoying the summer and all of the outside activities that go with it.

Rides in the country for ice cheap ed hardy cream and even lunch out at the new Hollywood Diner are favorite stops right now.

We have a list of activities in store for July. July 1 is Peachy Keen Day; we will be serving peach tea and Peach ice cream on the patio. July 4 is our annual 4th of July celebration. July 6 is a Pick-a-nick Basket Affair with Paul Romero as the entertainment. July 13 we are having a Disney Cruise with Dedra and Al as the entertainment with special guests. July 15 is Remote Control Day and our residents will become experienced race car drivers as they will be racing their remote control cars around our facility. Look out NASCAR. On this day also we will be inviting the Carbon County environmentalists into the facility with the Birds of Prey.

July 17 is Kids Say the Darndest Things Day, this should be very entertaining. July 22 is ice cream cones anniversary. In honor of the day we will be serving Ice cream cones outside. On July 23 our entertainment will be Betty Carpender.

On July 28 residents will have a fireside chat with our administrator Cathy Kurtz; this is a monthly activity where any issues the residents would like to address are discussed at this time. We will also hold our monthly birthday party on this date with Emil Kitlan entertaining.

Other events that are planned but not yet scheduled for this month are a trip to Trexler's Lehigh Valley Zoo, a trip to Mohegan Sun, crafts, mall trips, ice cream trips and the movie theater.

In our Shepherd Unit summer has arrived and we are enjoying every minute of it. The Garden Club has been very busy keeping up with our four large vegetable and herb boxes.

We have planted seven varieties of tomatoes, numerous peppers, along with zucchini and butternut squash, egg plant and cucumbers.

There are at least eight different herbs which we will use throughout the summer for our many culinary projects, including fresh salsa, pesto, tomato sauces and sun tea.

We have been picking a variety of fresh flowers to brighten up our home here.

The residents will be looking forward to many July festivities including our 4th of July picnic, birthday celebrations, craft corner with artist Michele Tokach displaying her and residents beautiful creations.

July is National Blueberry month, our cooking klatch will include resident's favorite blueberry recipes tiffany heart necklace and activities will treat residents with blueberry pancakes for a breakfast treat.

We will continue visiting local parks for picnics and ice cream socials.

The month is full of many talented entertainers who keep us all literally on our toes.

The menu for the 4th of July celebration consists of hamburgers, Italian sausage, and corn on the cob, baked beans, watermelon, and sundae cups.

"You have to make a little moat around it," Huebner says as she pats the dirt around her baby squash plants.

Originally from Las Vegas, she is a newcomer on the gardening scene. The brisk air and mountain views are a welcome sight. "You couldn't have this in Las Vegas," she said.

In her second year of planting, Huebner spends almost cheap ed hardy every day in the garden, watering and caring for her vegetables. "I'm planting tomatoes, bell peppers, turnips, lettuce, spinach, onions and squash," she said, peering down at her little plants.

After emptying the rest of the bag of fertilizer into her plot, Huebner takes a little break.

"I have to rest a minute," the 70-year-old woman said as she stood and stretched. "It's a lot of work, honey."

While her husband helps water occasionally, the plot is mainly her project. "I do most of it," she said. "He just eats it."

Last year the pair grew a bumper crop of tomatoes. "We were eating tomatoes like crazy," she said.

With no land of their own, the Huebners, who live in an apartment in Provo, take advantage of the Community Garden, a service offered by the Community Action Services and Food Bank (CASFB).

The garden, located behind the Boulder apartments in south Provo, is open to the community to rent plots.

"This is just for the people who can't garden at their home," said Jillian Sargent, the financial wellness coordinator for Community Action Services.

Sargent is in charge of renting out the plots as well as maintaining the garden and CASFB plots. Residents of the Boulder apartments can check out a plot for free but a small fee is required for members of the community to rent a plot.

"The main goal is to foster self-reliance and a sense of community," she said. The garden encourages residents to get out and get to know their neighbors, while growing their own healthy food.

"This is definitely a good service to the community," Huebner said. "When you live in an apartment you're inside all the time, so this gives you a chance to get out."

Brent Rocque, another Boulder resident, is also in his second year at the garden. "I just love gardening," he said.

Rocque still has food in the freezer from last year's crop. "It's good to have fresh vegetables," he said as he watered his beans, peas, soybeans, raspberries, carrots, tomatoes and onions.

A big fan of pesto, he also plans to grow basil, along with parsley and cilantro.

"It's just a fun way to relax and it pays off in the end," he said.

Beginning in June, the garden will offer a children's gardening program. Four plots are reserved for the children. Twice a week they will get together to learn about gardening and care for their plants.

Last year the children involved grew a salsa garden. At the end of the season they had a party and made salsa from the plants they grew.

"It teaches them responsibility and healthy eating," said Sargent.

Even if you are not looking to rent, the CASFB always needs volunteers. "All the weeds need to be pulled, and we need volunteers for that," Sarge
